Definitions of Terminology

Breeding Female - Mature female alpaca that has started breeding, has been bred and due to deliver first cria, and/ or awaiting confirmed pregnancy following delivery of first cria.
Breeding Male - Male alpaca currently breeding and/ or has proven pregnancies awaiting delivery of offspring.
Breeding Male Candidate - Male alpaca that displays qualities highly sought after in a stud.
Companion Animal - An alpaca, usually male, that has been gelded, trained, conditioned, and tested to have a personality/ disposition that allows easy pairing with another alpaca. However, some companion animals, depending on animal's history, integrate better with one sex over another.
Confirmed/ Proven - Registered with and/ or certified by ARI to have genetic lineage recorded or traceable.
Cria - A newborn alpaca.
Dam - Female alpaca that has produced offspring.
Gelding - Castrated male alpaca.
Healthy - Deemed, in writing by a licensed veteranarian, to be free of disease, parasites, and/ or free of residual complications related to previous health conditions that prevents successful trasportation, safe passage, herd intigration, breeding, and/ or capability to produce live cria with very little to no history of complications.
Juvenile - Young male alpaca that is over a year old, but not yet of breeding age.
Maiden - Young female alpaca that is close to breeding age, but has
not began breeding career.
Proven/ Confirmed - Registered with and/ or certified by ARI to have genetic lineage recorded or traceable. Proven Female - Female alpaca that has proven reproductive capability by delivering a cria to term, has or is suckling a cria at her side, and has been proven to be pregnant following delivery.
Proven Stud - Breeding male alpaca that as no less than 10 "confirmed" offspring on the ground.
Sire - Male alpaca that has produced offspring.
Stud - Breeding male alpaca that has at least one but less than 10 offsping on the ground.
Weanling - Baby alpaca that has been weaned from Dam, but is less than 1 year of age.
Yearling - Young alpaca that is at or just over a year old.
